2. How to locate the serial number?
Every VELUX skylight and roof window features product information marked on the unit. This marking contains the product serial number, which tells the skylight model, glass type and date of manufacture.
- Locate the metal plate on your skylight or roof window by looking on the frame in the suggested areas indicated below.

III. Skylight Measurement Guide
1. Measuring to replace an old VELUX deck-mounted skylight
Even with the product ID tag information, it's still important to measure the old VELUX skylight to ensure you order the replacement size that fits best. For deck-mounted models, measure the exterior glass pane length and width from the inside edge of the cladding.
The newest VELUX models have a slightly different drywall groove, so the drywall panel at the top of the skylight may need to be trimmed down for the new skylight to fit. If there's a gap between the drywall and the skylight, use door casing molding or crown molding to cover it. For small gaps, use painter's caulk to fill in the gap.
2. Measuring to replace VELUX or non-VELUX curb-mounted skylights
For curb-mounted models that are VELUX or other brands, measure:
- The length and width of the outside curb, including the curb and any roofing membrane material, and
- The outside glass length and width from the inside edge of the skylight cladding.
3. Measuring to replace a non-VELUX deck-mounted skylight
For non-VELUX skylights, measure the drywall opening length and width on the inside of the house, the length and width of the exterior glass inside the cladding and the overall size of the skylight (inclusive of cladding).
IV. Skylight Flashing and Cladding
1. Flashing
- What it is: A kit of specially shaped metal pieces that install around the skylight.
- Purpose: Directs water away from the skylight and roofing to prevent leaks.
- Material: Aluminum most commonly.
2. Cladding
- What it is: The exterior metal that wraps around the skylight frame.
- Purpose: Protects the wood frame (or interior frame) from weather — rain, snow, UV, etc.
- Material: Usually aluminum (sometimes copper or painted steel depending on the model).
- Factory-installed: Cladding is part of the skylight itself — you don't install it separately.
- Colors: VELUX typically uses a neutral color like gray (stock color is often "neutral gray" or "bronze" depending on age).
V. Supplementing Skylights
Step 1: Align with the Client
- Determine if the client wants skylights replaced or supplemented.
- Clarify whether they want only skylights approved or a full supplement of the claim.
- Once client needs are clear, proceed to the next steps.
Step 2: Gather Skylight Photos
- Look for hail damage to cladding and flashing (dents, chalk-marked damage).
- Obtain a clear photo of the silver product tag.
- If close-up photos or product tags are missing, ask the client to provide them.
- Share this link to help the client locate the tag: https://www.veluxusa.com/help/product-id.
- Samples:
- Chalk-marked damage
- Silver product tag
Step 3: Determine Skylight Age
- Check the tag or Velterm number: https://www.veluxusa.com/help/product-id
- If the skylight is from 2004 or earlier, parts are unavailable.
- If age is confirmed, use the VELUX template letter to state that parts are discontinued and replacement is necessary.
- Save the edited template letter in Google Drive for insurance submission.
Step 4: Contact VELUX Representative (If Skylight Age is Unknown)
- If no tags or numbers are available, contact VELUX representative Charles Otis.
- Attach photos of the skylights and email him from info10.csp@gmail.com.

Subject: Potential Skylight Replacement at [Client Address]
Email:
Good afternoon Charles,
Hope you are having a great day! I am working with a customer who may need skylights replaced on their home at [Client Address]. Attached are photos of the skylights.
Unfortunately, there were no tags or Velterm numbers. Are you able to determine from the attached photos if these are VELUX or another manufacturer? If so, are parts available to replace cladding and flashing? Or, if the parts are no longer available, would you recommend a total replacement?
Thank you in advance for your insights. We appreciate your help!
Kind regards,

Step 5: Review Response and Document It
- Wait for Charles to confirm whether the skylights are no longer manufactured.
- If parts are unavailable, he will recommend full replacement.
- Save Charles' email as a PDF in the Deal folder on Google Drive.
- Copy and paste Charles’ response into the VELUX template letter, then save it in Google Drive.
Step 6: Align with the Insurance Adjuster
- Call the adjuster and explain that skylight parts are unavailable.
- Inform them of the email confirmation from VELUX.
- Ask: “How would you like us to proceed? Should we send photos and the email, or include a supplemental estimate?”
Step 7: Submit the Supplement to Insurance
- Typically, adjusters will request a supplemental estimate that includes the skylights.
- Usually, skylights are included in a full supplement with the roof and other claims.
- In some cases, an estimate for only the skylights is necessary, based on client preference.
- Ensure all required documents are sent:
- Email confirmation from Charles (if available)
- VELUX template letter
Step 8: Follow Up Based on Client Goals
- If the adjuster asks for only photos and the email, send those and await their revision.
- If the claim includes a full supplement (roof, etc.), move forward accordingly.
- If the client wants skylights approved first, wait for confirmation before proceeding.
- If skylights are all the client wanted, update the deal status to Bill the Client.
