Screen Recorder Guide

*Many thanks to Louie for researching & writing this!

This KB provides a comprehensive overview of different free screen recording applications for Windows and Mac, offering tips and best practices for optimal audio and video quality. We encourage you to explore the options below to find which application best suits your needs.

Reminders:

This guide is organized by application, allowing you to find the information you need quickly.

Each section includes clear instructions, settings recommendations, and helpful tips.

Setting up your Windows for success:

Since a headset/earphone’s mic sensitivity varies, we can try to minimize the background noise by customizing our device’s settings:

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Communication tab > toggle “Mute all other sounds”.

Google Chrome Extention:

Download the app here: Google Chrome Extension link

After installation, it’s recommended that you pin it in your Chrome so you can easily access the app by clicking the  icon.

Macbooks can only share sound if they’re sharing a “Tab”.

Please upload the video recording to GD so it can be “seekable”.

Settings: Desktop + Mixed + Default + Stream Write + Minimize

Built-in Screen Recorder for Windows:

You can trigger the app by pressing Windows Key + G

Settings: Gear Icon > Widget > Capture > Audio to Record: All

Built-in Screen Recorder for Mac:

You can trigger the app by pressing SHIFT + CMD + 5

When recording, please do not wear a headset or earphones. Mac uses the device’s mic to record the audio.

Settings: Record Entire Screen > Options: Desktop + MacBook Microphone + Toggle: Show floating thumbnail + Remember Last Selection + Show Mouse Clicks

OBS Studio:

Download the app here: OBS Studio Website

Please note that if the internet or computer is slow, it is possible that the recording may lag and affect the audio quality.

Before you start recording, you need to add “Sources” by clicking the + button. Click on “Display Capture” to add your monitor/s. To add an audio source, click on “Audio Input Capture” then choose the specific device that you want to use.

If you’re using a laptop, you will most likely have a built-in mic. Make sure that you turn the “Mic/Aux” all the way down to avoid echoes in your recording.

Click on the gear icon to access “Advanced Audio Properties” and set the “Audio Input Capture” volume to 500%. It’s recommended that you check if this volume fits your device since this will affect the outcome of your voice in the recording.

If you’re using two monitors, you can choose the specific screen that you want to record by clicking the “Monitor Display” located in the “Sources” deck and changing the “Display”.
